Almost everyone plans forward from today and runs out of time. This works the other way: pick your course start date and destination, and it back-plans real calendar milestones, marking clearly which are set by a published government window and which are our own sensible planning.

1. When does your course start?

2. Which destination?

The windows that are actually fixed

Four dates in this timeline are not opinions. The United Kingdom will not accept a Student visa application earlier than six months before the course starts from outside the UK, and its financial evidence rule is stricter still: the funds must sit for 28 consecutive days without dipping below the required total, and that 28-day period must end within 31 days of the day you apply. Those two rules together define exactly when your money has to be in place.

The United States works on two separate clocks that people routinely confuse. An F-1 visa can now be issued up to 365 days before your program start date, expanded from 120 days in February 2023 — but you may not enter the country earlier than 30 days before the start date printed on your I-20, whatever date the visa was issued. Holding the visa early is useful; it does not let you arrive early.

Canada requires two documents before you can even apply: a Letter of Acceptance from a designated learning institution and a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter from the province you will study in, with the CAQ serving that purpose in Quebec. IRCC also asks for four months of bank statements, which quietly sets the date your funding needs to be settled by. Two-week processing is available at PhD level. Australia anchors on the Confirmation of Enrolment, which is only issued after you accept and pay a deposit, and applications lodged from 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115.

Why the early milestones matter more than the visa

The visa application is rarely what makes people miss an intake. The English test is. Slots at busy centres fill weeks ahead, results take a further one to two weeks, and if you need a retake you have just spent another month. Transcripts and certified translations are the second most common cause, particularly when your institution is slow or your documents sit in another country. Referees are the third: three to four weeks of notice is the minimum for a letter worth reading, and asking in the same week as the deadline produces a letter that reads exactly like it.

That is why the track above starts fifteen months out rather than six. By the time the visa window opens, everything that can go slowly should already be done.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start applying for a September intake?

About fifteen months ahead if you want room to recover from anything going wrong, and no later than twelve. Enter your course start date above and it will show you the actual dates, with rows already passed dimmed so you can see immediately whether you are behind.

How early can I apply for a student visa?

It depends on the country and the answers are not close. The UK sets a hard limit of six months before the course starts from outside the UK. The United States allows the visa to be issued up to 365 days ahead. Canada advises applying as soon as you are accepted, but you need your Letter of Acceptance and your Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter first. Australia needs your Confirmation of Enrolment before you can lodge.

How long does a student visa decision take?

The UK publishes a guide of three weeks from outside the UK and eight weeks from inside. Canada’s processing varies greatly by volume, with two-week processing available at PhD level. Australia directs you to its processing time guide rather than publishing a fixed figure. Build in room for one round of follow-up document requests whichever country you are applying to.

Can I enter the country as soon as I get my visa?

Not in the United States. You may not enter earlier than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20, even if the visa was issued eleven months earlier. Arriving sooner would require a separate visitor visa, and turning up at the border too early is a refusal of entry, not a warning.

What is the difference between the two kinds of date on this page?

Rows tagged published rule come from the government window named on that row and link to the source in the text above. Rows tagged planning are our own back-planning from the course start — sensible spacing based on how long these tasks actually take, but not set by anyone official. Course start dates also vary by institution, so confirm yours and shift the whole track accordingly.
