Lazio DiSCo Scholarship scholarship — AbroadPilot

The Lazio DiSCo Scholarship (DiSCo Lazio, formerly LazioDisu) is a regional, need-based grant run by the Lazio Region’s right-to-study body for students enrolled at universities in Lazio — the region around Rome. It’s the Lazio equivalent of right-to-study schemes in other Italian regions, and any international student admitted to an eligible university in Lazio can apply.

Because it’s need-based, the amount you receive depends mainly on your family’s income (measured through Italy’s ISEE system) and, from the second year, on your academic progress. This guide explains the benefits, the all-important ISEE rules, eligibility, deadlines, and how to apply.

What the Lazio DiSCo Scholarship covers

The grant bundles several benefits, which can include:

  • A cash scholarship (recently up to around €7,655 per year, scaled to your income band)
  • Accommodation in a DiSCo student residence, or a contribution toward rent if you live elsewhere
  • Free or subsidised meals at university canteens
  • Possible contributions for international mobility

If accommodation and meals are provided in kind, the cash amount is reduced accordingly.

How the income (ISEE) rules work

This is the part international students most often get wrong. Eligibility and the amount depend on your household’s economic situation, expressed as an ISEE (or, for income/assets held abroad, an ISEEUP / ISEE Parificato). In recent calls, the threshold has been an ISEE/ISEEUP at or below roughly €30,000, with the full amount paid below about two-thirds of that ceiling and reduced amounts above it.

International students with family abroad must obtain the ISEEUP through an authorised Italian CAF office, using official documents from the Italian diplomatic authorities in their home country (household composition, gross income, property and assets), translated into Italian. Self-certifications are not accepted. Start gathering these early — the documentation process takes time.

Who is eligible?

  • Enrolment: be enrolled (by the call’s stated date) at a university with its registered office in Lazio — bachelor’s, master’s, single-cycle, or non-funded PhD/specialisation programmes.
  • Income: meet the ISEE/ISEEUP threshold set in that year’s call.
  • Merit (from year two): first-year grants are mainly income-based; to keep funding you must earn a minimum number of credits (CFU) by set dates.
  • In-person study: students enrolled at fully online universities are generally not eligible.
  • Residence permit (non-EU): non-EU students must provide a valid residence permit (or passport initially, then the permit) by the stated deadlines.

Deadlines

The Right-to-Study call usually opens in June–July with the main application deadline in summer (recent cycles closed around late July), followed by separate deadlines for signing the ISEE/ISEEUP and, for non-residents, later dates to upload documents. Definitive accommodation and scholarship rankings are published in stages from around September. Always check the current call (“Bando Diritto allo Studio”) on the official DiSCo site for exact dates.

How to apply: step by step

  1. Get admitted in Lazio. Secure enrolment/admission at an eligible university in the Lazio region.
  2. Prepare your ISEE/ISEEUP. Gather the official, translated financial documents and obtain your ISEEUP through an Italian CAF office.
  3. Register on the DiSCo portal. Create an account at laziodisco.it and complete your profile.
  4. Submit the Right-to-Study application. Apply to the current call before the deadline, selecting the benefits you want (scholarship, accommodation, meals).
  5. Upload required documents. Non-EU students upload a residence permit (or passport first, then the permit) by the stated dates.
  6. Check the rankings. Watch for provisional and definitive rankings, and meet the credit (CFU) requirements to keep the grant in later years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Lazio DiSCo Scholarship fully funded?

It’s a need-based package that can include a cash grant, accommodation and meals. How much you get depends on your ISEE income band; lower income means a larger grant.

What is ISEE / ISEEUP?

It’s Italy’s measure of household economic situation. International students with income or assets abroad need an ISEEUP (ISEE Parificato), prepared through an Italian CAF office using official translated documents.

Can I apply if I study online?

No — students enrolled at fully online universities are generally not eligible, and in-person attendance is required for most courses.
