Canada and the UK are the two most-asked-about destinations on this site, and most “Canada vs UK” content online compares vibes, not numbers. This uses the same verified figures already published in our own Canada and UK visa guides, so nothing here is invented for this comparison — it’s the same data, laid side by side.
Side-by-side: what each actually costs and requires
What the numbers actually mean for your decision
Upfront cost favours Canada. The UK’s Immigration Health Surcharge alone can exceed Canada’s entire study-permit fee several times over, paid in one lump sum before you’ve set foot in the country. Canada’s CA$22,895 proof-of-funds figure is an annual number, not a one-time charge, and it explicitly excludes tuition — budget that separately with our budget template.
Post-study work length currently favours Canada for anyone on a 2-year-plus bachelor’s, master’s or PhD program — a 3-year PGWP beats a 2-year (soon 18-month) UK Graduate visa for most applicants. That gap narrows only for UK PhD graduates, who get the same 3 years as Canada.
The UK’s rules are more predictable right now. Canada has tightened Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility for international students in 2026, and the federal Express Entry system itself is mid-reform. The UK’s Graduate visa change is scheduled and dated (1 January 2027), which makes it easier to plan around even though the outcome is less generous.
Neither is “easier” to get permanent residence in. Canada’s path runs through a points-based draw system with a score that shifts by round; the UK’s runs through years of continuous qualifying visa status with no lottery element, but a much longer minimum timeline. Compare your actual route with the PR Pathway Timeline Builder rather than a generic ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper overall, Canada or the UK?
On government-set fees and charges alone, Canada is cheaper — the UK’s Immigration Health Surcharge is the single biggest gap. Tuition varies more by university than by country in either case, so run your own numbers in the budget template rather than relying on a national average.
Which gives a longer post-study work visa?
Canada’s PGWP currently offers up to 3 years for most 2-year-plus programs at any degree level. The UK’s Graduate visa gives 2 years for bachelor’s/master’s (dropping to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027) and 3 years for PhD.
Which is faster to permanent residence?
Neither has a fixed timeline you can promise in advance. Canada’s Express Entry can move quickly for candidates with a strong CRS score and qualifying Canadian experience; the UK’s route to settlement is typically a fixed multi-year period regardless of your profile.
