Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarships are both funded by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), both fully cover a UK degree, and both show up on every “top scholarships for Nigerians” list. That similarity is where the usefulness ends. They select for almost opposite things, and applying to the wrong one wastes months you could have spent on the one that actually fits.

Chevening funds a one-year master’s for demonstrated leaders, open to citizens of any Chevening-eligible country. The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship funds a doctorate for applicants from least-developed and lower-middle-income Commonwealth countries specifically, selected on research quality and development impact.
